Race Information for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon & 6K on Nov 12, 2017.
NOTE: There is NO RACE DAY packet pickup. Also, due to security concerns, only items placed in clear plastic bags – preferably the one you received at packet pickup – will be allowed at the baggage hold area at the finish.
Where and when does the 2017 race start?
HALF MARATHON & 6k Start Line: On Washington Street at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Pedestrian Path, Old Town Alexandria, VA
Start Time: 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, Nov 12, 2017
Finish Line: In the Bridgeyard Apartments parking area on the Old Town side of the Potomac River
When and where is packet pickup?
Packet pickup for the half marathon and 6K is on Saturday only, Nov 11, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the US Patent and Trademark Office at 600 Dulany Street off Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, VA. Metro stop nearby is Eisenhower Avenue on the Yellow line and King Street on the Blue and Yellow lines. There is plenty of FREE parking in the garages at USPTO. SORRY NO RACE DAY PACKET PICKUP. We do however offer a packet mail option to you if you cannot make arrangements to pick up your packet.
Can I have a friend or family member pick up my packet for me? What if I don’t feel like coming to packet pickup or am not available those days?
Yes, if you are unable to attend the packet pickup hours, a friend or family member is allowed to pick up your packet for you. They will need to bring your registration confirmation which you received via email upon registration. MAXIMUM four packets per person.
I cannot make the race this year; can I get a refund or transfer my race entry to another participant or defer my entry until 2017?
We do not allow refunds so please do not ask. You may process a deferral until November 1, 2017 without charge and through November 10 for a $15 fee. PLEASE do not give/sell your bib to another runner without notifying WWBH. This will lead to disqualification of both parties without refund.
I picked up my bib number at the packet pickup and I don’t see my chip in my packet. What do I do?
No chips here. Instead, we use the timing tag affixed to the back of the bib number. Please do not remove this tag. Your times will not be recorded if you do not wear your bib number. And please do not swap bibs with anybody else. It will screw up our results and will delay medical intervention if your bib and your emergency contact information do not match up.
What do I need to know about Buses from the free parking at US Patent & Trademark Office to the start line and back to USPTO from the finish festival?
- WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FREE PARKING AT THE US PATENT & TRADEMARK OFFICE GARAGES AND OUR FREE SHUTTLE BUS WHICH WILL DELIVER YOU TO AND FROM THE START/FINISH AREA. PARKING IN OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA ON A SUNDAY MORNING IS VERY, VERY LIMITED. THE SHUTTLE IS A VERY SHORT HOP BETWEEN USPTO AND THE RACE SITE AND BUSES WILL BE RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY.
- THE FIRST BUS LEAVES USPTO (NEAR Eisenhower Ave at Mill Road) FOR THE START AT 5 AM AND THE LAST BUS LEAVES USPTO AT 6:15 AM. THE BUSES RUN BACK FROM THE FINISH FESTIVAL BACK TO USPTO BETWEEN 9:00 AM AND 11:30 AM.
- If you are staying at our host hotel, the beautiful Westin Alexandria in Alexandria, you need only roll out of bed and grab the bus to the start.
US Patent & Trademark Office can be found off Route 95 North via the Telegraph Road North exit which splits to Eisenhower Avenue Go right and head to USPTO where City of Alexandria police and our parking volunteers will direct you into the garages. From Rt. 95 South, it is off the Telegraph Road North exit.
Also note that we will have plenty of porta-johns near the starting area. NO backpacks or items not in clear bags allowed on the bus.
What timing splits will I get during the race?
For the half marathon, we will have mats at the start and finish, as well as the 5- and 10-mile marks. Our goal is to have all the runner’s times on the website before you get home from the event, unless you live under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Old Town! Typically, we post all results by 11 a.m. We will also time our 6K competitors.
Where can I find a course map?
That’s an easy one! It’s below in a handy PDF format. See where the mile markers and refreshment stops are. For the half marathon, there are refreshment stops at Miles 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and finish, all with water and some with Gatorade and one with portable johns (Mile 4).View Course Map
Can I wear headphones during the race?
The use of personal music devices is strongly discouraged at this race but we cannot stop runners from bringing whatever personal audio/photo device you prefer. One favor please – run responsibly and be courteous to your fellow runners and to race officials.
Where are the portajohns in case that urge hits me on the course?
We have plenty of johns at the start and finish. Also, we will have three johns at each refreshment stop, so plan accordingly if that is possible. We take no responsibility for time you lose in the race from being off course at a pit stop.
I brought most of my life’s possessions to the starting line. Is there a way I can get them back to the start to reunite with me?
Of course. That’s why we have the great volunteers at our baggage check area to take your runner bag at the Finish Line Festival. When you receive your goody bag at packet pickup, hang on to that plastic bag, write your bib number in the big box. Please keep your laundry to a minimum! Remember, this is a morning race, not a week’s vacation.
Will I get a finishers medal for sweating it out for 13.1 miles or 6k (3.73 miles) one of America's most scenic courses?
Yes, all HALF MARATHON finishers receive our distinctive classy finishers medal and all 6k finishers receive our new Woody Wilson finishers medals. Wear it proudly as you earned it. If you don’t plan on finishing the race, please don’t ask us for a finisher’s medal (we’re serious here, we’ve been asked).
I was so smart to sign up for the Alexandria Double, which is a partnership between the May Alexandria Running Festival and the October Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon. So where can I retrieve my medal?
Competitors in both events in a calendar year receive another awesome medal, plus of course discounts on registration for both events. You can pick up that medal near the VIP Tent and Bandstand in the Finish Festival.
What happens in the Finish Line Festival by Bridgeyard Apartments?
First off, celebration takes center stage as runners of all ages, sizes and abilities cross the finish line under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge along the Virginia side of the Potomac River. Then you get to hear our signature band The Darby Brothers. And of course we refreshments like bagels, Gatorade, water and more. We have a large medical tent right at the finish line should you need their services. We will have an awards ceremony for the top runners and we will announce and hand out the age-group awards and our Alexandria Double very cool medals near our bandstand.
What if I need medical attention during the race?
Please take good care to run within your abilities. But if you need medical attention along the course, we will have medical support out there. Please ask for help from an EMT, police officer, course marshal or at a refreshment stop. Medics will be patrolling the course. We will have a SAG vehicle following the last runner. NOTE: if you ask for medical attention in our medical tent, even as small a request as an aspirin, please be prepared to answer a brief health questionnaire from our medical professionals. This is for your safety.
What if it rains on race morning?
Runners are tough and they run in rain. For serious weather, check our website www.wilsonbridgehalf.com for updates.
My spouse/significant other/parent/friend/colleague has come to watch me and he/she is looking for something to do while I run. Can they volunteer?
Glad you asked. Of course. We have lots of very cool jobs all through race week. Just check out www.wilsonbridgehalf.com and pick your favorite task. We know you will have fun, plus you will go home with a cool t-shirt!
Where are the best viewing spots for the race?
With our new course, the spectator opportunities are boundless! You can stand by the bridge on Washington Street and watch your favorite runner(s) at the start, Mile 10, Mile 11 1/2, and the exciting finish!
What time is the awards ceremony? Will I be rewarded for running real fast?
We plan to begin the awards ceremony at 8:45 a.m. for the winners and 9:30 a.m. for the age-group champs. In the meantime, enjoy the live music of the Darby Brothers. We have prize money for the very fast as well as attractive age-group plaques for the top finishers in our posted age-groups. Look for our champions of the Visually Impaired National Half Marathon Championships on stage.
